“That was one hell of a story”, Tanvi gasped. Her heart knew that every word Suhasini said was true but her mind wasn’t able to assess this twisted love story. “Did you accept his solution? How come you are in Ajmer? And, is today the day of judgement for you? Did you find someone else?” Tanvi bombarded her with questions.
“Yes, today we are supposed to meet after 5 years. We had decided to meet in Ajmer for how ever life turns out to be we might need lots of strength and there can be no better place to teach us about faith and resilience than this. We had taken a leap of faith and we don’t know what has happened to the other”, Suhasini continued while glancing towards the main entrance every few seconds.
Suhasini had accepted her new husband’s offer for at that time she couldn’t think beyond freedom. Her thoughts were based on momentary behaviour and shallow thinking. However, a few months later, all was not same as before. She slowly realized that freedom was a state of mind. You can be free in your thoughts even when physically chained. The boyfriend had preconceived notions of virginity and he declined to have any connection with a married woman. His hypocrisy was evident. Though free, she felt lonelier.
The new husband would send him money order every month to help her meet her expenses along with a small letter. There was no hint of anger, frustration or even the urge to question in those letters. They always spoke of positive, happy and motivational thoughts. Suhasini felt empowered reading those. Whenever she felt depressed or lonely she would read those letter over and over, and every time she drew strength from it. Suhasini started to wait for his note every month.
Suhasini is now Dr Suhasini. She completed her doctors and is currently working as an acclaimed consultant to Indian Foreign Services department. She had transformed from a vulnerable girl to an empowered woman. She did meet a lot of people, even handsome men during those five years but with every letter at the start of the month, her feelings for this unknown stranger husband grew.
Today, she was waiting to tell him that she couldn’t have found a more understanding and mature person as husband.
It was evening already. Suhasini was getting restless now. Tanvi was growing curious.
“God forbid! But it might be a possibility that he is not keeping well or he is out of country. It does happen in movies. I had seen such a movie. In that case would you move on or will you wait?” Tanvi tried to keep her intellectually engaged.
Suhasini looked sad.” I was immature 5 years ago but today I am mature and I will accept gracefully whatever life throws at me. He has been with me in spirit throughout these years. He has been my anchor. I think in his odd ways he has executed the duties of a good husband perfectly. So, I will be grateful for that. I will never cringe if he doesn’t turn up or if he has found someone else”.
Just then a young boy came looking for Suhasini and handed her over a letter, “This is for you, didi”. And before anyone could probe him further, he vanished in the crowd.
